ROG Flow Z13 (2023) GZ301 review

Gaming laptops have been around for a while, but there's a common issue with the best models: they tend to be bulky and heavy. Asus is one of the few companies attempting to address this problem, with innovative products like the ROG Flow X13 from 2021 and now the tablet-style ROG Flow Z13.

This concept is attractive—it's a 2-in-1 device similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro series, but it includes a dedicated GPU and high-end specifications that compete with traditional gaming laptops.

ROG Flow Z13

4.5 Excellent

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 brings fresh innovation to a stagnant market with its 2-in-1 form factor and gaming-level performance. However, its high price, especially with the XG Mobile dock, may put it out of reach for most consumers.

Pros

  • Compact, portable design
  • XG Mobile GPU dock enhances performance
  • Stunning display quality

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Too heavy for typical tablet usage
  • Battery life is below average

The device is also compatible with the company's XG Mobile eGPU, which can enhance the Flow Z13's performance, turning it into a desktop gaming powerhouse. However, this comes at a significantly higher price compared to other gaming laptops on the market.

Design and Build Quality

The ROG Flow Z13 exudes a distinct gaming aesthetic, with its metallic exterior, bold fan vents, and RGB lighting. While some may find this design excessive, it undeniably adds a unique flair. However, the front view offers a more understated look, with only subtle RGB accents and keyboard font hints at its gaming nature. The tablet's magnetic keyboard, reminiscent of the Surface, features a felt exterior and can be detached or folded onto the back. The kickstand allows for convenient viewing in tablet mode, though the device's thickness might be noticeable.

This 2023 model maintains the same design and functionality as its predecessor, offering a sturdy build quality and a comfortable typing experience on the keyboard folio. The tablet's weight, at 1.2 kilos, may be considered heavy for a 13-inch device, but the powerful hardware inside compensates. While the tablet format works well on a desk, its ergonomics might be less ideal in other situations. The kickstand's adjustable angles and rubber lip provide stability and comfort, but the lack of a vertical viewing option might be a minor drawback.

The Flow Z13's design incorporates practical elements, such as the placement of components behind the screen to prevent overheating and the placement of outputs on the top edge to avoid hot air directing towards the screen. The device's advanced cooling system allows for powerful hardware and higher performance compared to its predecessor. In terms of connectivity, the Flow Z13 offers two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a headphone jack, and a microSD card reader. The USB-A port has been upgraded to 3.2 gen1, and both USB-C ports support data, video, and charging. Additionally, the proprietary XG mobile connection allows for external GPU expansion.

Display, Speakers, and Webcam

The ROG Flow Z13 boasts a stunning 13.4-inch IPS QHD+ display with a 165Hz refresh rate, offering exceptional visuals for gaming and everyday tasks. While the glossy finish may reflect light, the display's brightness compensates well in most environments. The touchscreen functionality adds versatility, allowing for convenient navigation and interaction. However, the thin bezels can make accidental touches a concern.

The integrated webcam captures decent quality images, with some minor detail loss in low light. The 5MP IR camera enables convenient facial recognition for Windows Hello logins. Unfortunately, the audio output from the dual speakers is underwhelming, lacking the depth and quality expected from a premium device. Front-facing speakers would have significantly enhanced the audio experience.

Overall, the ROG Flow Z13's design and exterior look are impressive, combining a high-quality display with a sleek and portable form factor. The touchscreen functionality and webcam add convenience, while the audio could benefit from an upgrade for a more immersive experience.

Connectivity

Asus Rog Z13 connectivity

The ROG Flow Z13, despite its 2-in-1 form factor, doesn't compromise on connectivity. Its thicker design allows for a generous assortment of ports, including a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB-A port, a 3.5mm headset jack, and another USB-C port hidden beneath a rubber cover. Additionally, the device supports wireless connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.

One of the standout features is the inclusion of a microSD card slot, a rarity in thin and lightweight devices. This allows for easy storage expansion without requiring disassembly. Furthermore, the M.2 2230 solid state drive is swappable, providing users with the flexibility to upgrade their storage capacity as needed.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The ROG Flow Z13 is a sleek and portable 2-in-1 gaming tablet that boasts a stylish design and a detachable keyboard folio. The keyboard cover, which is included in the box, offers a comfortable typing experience with RGB backlit keys and a decent trackpad. While the keyboard cover might feel a bit flimsy and the trackpad could be larger, it still provides reliable input for gaming and productivity. The folio attaches securely to the tablet with magnets, ensuring a stable connection and responsive keyboard input.

The tablet itself features a sleek and modern aesthetic, with a premium build quality and a comfortable grip. The 13.4-inch QHD+ display offers vibrant colors and sharp visuals, making it ideal for gaming, content consumption, and creative work. The device's compact size and lightweight design make it easy to carry around, allowing you to enjoy gaming and productivity on the go.

Performance

The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is a gaming laptop that packs a lot of power into a small package. It is powered by a 20-thread Intel Core i9-13900H chip and an Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card. The laptop is also very well-ventilated, thanks to its large vents and fans. This keeps the laptop cool even under heavy load. The ROG Flow Z13 has a sleek and stylish design. The laptop is made of a combination of metal and plastic. The lid of the laptop is made of metal and features a ROG logo. The rest of the laptop is made of plastic.

Should You Buy It?

The ROG Flow Z13 maintains its distinctive appeal as a versatile 13-inch tablet, offering exceptional power for both work and play. The 2023 model boasts significant upgrades, including a superior display that caters to diverse needs, from everyday tasks to creative endeavors and gaming.

While the tablet form factor may not suit everyone's preferences, it offers distinct advantages in terms of cooling and comfort, especially when used with the keyboard folio.

The Z13's compact design and powerful performance make it a compelling choice for those seeking a high-performance device in a portable package.

However, the battery life remains a potential drawback, and users may want to consider the updated ROG Flow X13, which offers a larger battery and other enhancements. Ultimately, the choice between the Z13 and X13 will depend on individual preferences and priorities.
