Xbox has officially launched its much-anticipated disc-to-digital feature, unveiling it during the Xbox@Gamescom event. Beginning August 31, 2026, Xbox Insiders will receive exclusive early access to this new capability on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles that have disc drives.

This innovative feature allows players to convert their physical game discs into digital copies. The process is simple: users just insert the Xbox game disc into a compatible console and select the option to claim a digital entitlement for that game. Once converted, the digital version provides all the benefits of Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Moreover, if console sharing is enabled, all eligible family members can play the digitized game without needing the disc.

At launch, the disc-to-digital feature supports a catalog of 1,000 titles, and Xbox plans to expand this library further. Critically, after conversion, the original disc is no longer required to play the game, simplifying game management for users juggling between physical and digital libraries.

Interestingly, the physical disc still holds its own digital license and remains fully functional. If a player decides to sell the physical disc after converting it digitally, the digital entitlement transfers to the new owner, ensuring ownership rights remain clear and fair.

While the specific list of supported games has not yet been revealed, players can expect more details when the feature officially becomes available to Xbox Insiders. Despite speculation about Xbox moving towards an all-digital ecosystem, the upcoming Xbox Helix console is rumored to retain a disc drive, making the disc-to-digital feature a complementary option rather than a forced transition.

Xbox has emphasized that this feature is designed to simplify the transition for gamers managing both physical discs and digital libraries. This approach highlights Xbox's commitment to game preservation and player flexibility, contrasting with competitors like PlayStation, which recently ceased production of physical discs.

Overall, the disc-to-digital feature marks a significant step in enhancing user convenience, allowing gamers to maintain access to their entire collection with fewer hardware dependencies and more seamless integration across Xbox platforms.
