Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) is poised to become the next significant entry in the franchise, marking the 23rd game overall and the fourth in the rebooted Modern Warfare series following Modern Warfare III released in 2023. Developed primarily by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, the game is set for an October 23, 2026 launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC (Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox), and Nintendo Switch 2. This release marks the franchise's return to Nintendo platforms for the first time since Ghosts on the Wii U.

Beta Launch and What To Expect

The official Call of Duty Twitter announced the beta availability on August 21, 2026, inviting players to join with the tagline: “THE WAIT IS OVER. Play the Modern Warfare 4 Beta NOW.” This beta introduces six new multiplayer maps and, notably, the first-ever playable Campaign mission in a Call of Duty beta. The promotional trailer highlights urban combat environments featuring Korean signage, explosive action, tanks, helicopters, and snowy industrial scenes, rounding out with beta schedule details and pre-order bonuses.

Beta schedule:

  • Early Access (pre-order required): August 21, 11:00 AM PT to August 25, 10:00 AM PT on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox).
  • Open Beta (all players): August 28, 10:00 AM PT to September 1, 10:00 AM PT on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2.

Beta content includes core multiplayer maps, the dynamic Kill Block map, and the Campaign mission titled “Entrenched,” which unfolds trench warfare combat on the Korean Peninsula around a nuclear or energy facility assault. The second beta weekend introduces Ground War Combat Outpost maps like Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium, alongside the new Warzone Resurgence map Zodiac. This marks a historic debut for the franchise, as previous Call of Duty betas never included Campaign missions. This inclusion aims to broaden appeal beyond traditional multiplayer fans and encourages pre-orders.

Campaign and Narrative

The storyline centers on a large-scale invasion of South Korea by North Korea, threatening international stability. Players mainly follow Private Park (voiced by Young Mazino), a novice South Korean soldier fighting alongside his squad amid collapsing frontlines. Meanwhile, Captain John Price (Barry Sloane) features as a rogue operative on the run after assassinating a U.S. general, continuing his saga from earlier titles. Other key characters include First Lieutenant West of the U.S. Marines, ally Valeria Garza, and Simon “Ghost” Riley, whose relationship with Price is fraught.

Campaign missions offer a variety of settings including Korean trench warfare, urban New York battles, chases in Paris, SAS night operations in Mumbai, and citywide combat to reclaim control. The narrative adopts a serious, realistic tone spotlighting regular soldiers rather than superhuman operatives. Offline play and pausing are supported. Early Access for pre-order holders begins October 16, 2026. The beta mission “Entrenched” previews large-scale trench combat and facility incursions.

A cultural sensitivity note highlights the political complexity of the Korean Peninsula backdrop, with Infinity Ward collaborating with experts and Korean insiders to ensure respectful and accurate representation.

Multiplayer Experience

Modern Warfare 4 delivers grounded, foot-based combat with precise movement and sharp weapon handling. Features include:

  • Ballistic Authority: Emphasizes weapon accuracy with realistic handling, sound effects, and a removal of hipfire bloom for authenticity.
  • Movement Mechanics: New Mantle Slide, Mantle Momentum, and Steering enable fluid yet controlled traversal without adopting fully free movement found in recent Black Ops titles. Additional moves include Supine Slide, ledge shimmies, and pipe climbs.
  • Maps: Twelve new 6v6 maps reflecting campaign locations, such as Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, Cachette, Lotus, Lithium, Mumbai, Coal, Nautical, and Reactor variants. Dedicated Gunfight maps, large Combat Outpost/Big War maps with vehicles, and the signature Kill Block map with extensive modularity and weather effects are included.
  • Game Modes: Classic modes like Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, and Search & Destroy return. New modes introduced are Inflation, Hijack (Data Spike objective), Frontline, and Arms Deal. Smartstreaks reward kills and objectives.
  • Progression and Customization: Expanded Create-a-Class features include Gunny attachment optimizer, Apex Attachments offering unique options, streamlined weapon unlocks valid across modes, returning Prestige systems with Regular and Classic variants, and unified camo progression across Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone. The arsenal includes about 24 primary weapons, various attachments, lethal and tactical gear, killstreaks, and field upgrades.

Beta maps available during early access include Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, Cachette, Lotus, and Kill Block. Beta modes span TDM, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Inflation, Search & Destroy, and Gunfight variations.

DMZ Extraction Mode

The DMZ mode returns with major enhancements in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, near North Korea and Russia's borders following a nuclear meltdown. This sandbox extraction mode supports solo and squads of three, blending looting, combat, negotiation, and extraction elements. Features comprise interconnected story missions, dynamic operations, hostile NPCs and players, a notoriety system, Forward Operating Base management for loadout, crafting, and vendors, permanent operator trait progressions, and evolving weather conditions.
