Starlink India: Launch Date, Plans, and Pricing Revealed
Starlink’s India launch promises speeds up to 220 Mbps, targeting rural areas with premium plans starting at Rs 3,000/month.
OpenAI has raised the stakes for Indian users of its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by introducing new pricing in Indian rupees for its Plus and Pro subscription plans. While this move simplifies payments for local users, it comes with a catch: a roughly 14% price increase. Previously, Indian subscribers paid in US dollars, but the shift to rupee-based pricing has bumped up costs significantly.
Before the change, ChatGPT Plus was priced at $20 (approximately ₹1,750), and the Pro plan cost $200 (around ₹17,500). Now, Indian users will need to pay ₹1,999 for Plus and ₹19,900 for Pro each month. This price adjustment also affects OpenAI’s Team and Business plans, though specific details on those increases remain limited.
The price hike might surprise some, especially after discussions during OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s 2023 visit to India. Many local startup founders and developers highlighted the high cost of ChatGPT’s paid plans as a barrier to wider adoption. At the time, there was buzz about a more affordable “Go” plan, potentially launching alongside GPT-5, but no such plan has materialized yet.
Despite the increased costs, ChatGPT continues to dominate the AI chatbot market. According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, the platform has raked in over $2 billion in global consumer spending since its debut in May 2023. In 2025 alone, its mobile app generated $1.35 billion, a staggering 673% jump from the previous year. That translates to nearly $193 million in monthly revenue, dwarfing competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok, which together have earned just a fraction of ChatGPT’s total.
Meanwhile, competitors are stepping up their game in India. Perplexity AI is offering a year of free Pro access to Airtel users, while Google’s premium Gemini AI plans include perks like extra cloud storage and YouTube Premium. These moves could challenge ChatGPT’s dominance, especially as Indian users weigh the value of its advanced features against the new, higher price tags.
