Sony has yet to officially announce a release date for its next-generation PlayStation, the PS6, leaving fans uncertain about when the console might launch.
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki shared that the company still has not set a firm date for launching the PS6. Totoki indicated that a release in 2027 is now unlikely.
According to Totoki, persistent shortages of vital components worldwide have played a role in this delay. He noted, "Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape."
Around three months earlier, Totoki also confirmed that both the release date and pricing for the PS6 were yet to be determined. He mentioned that Sony has secured sufficient components to keep manufacturing the PS5 through the end of 2026, which matches CFO Lin Tao's earlier remarks that the current generation console will have an extended life cycle.
The WSJ discussion also touched on Sony's anticipation for GTA 6, which is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. Further, Sony is developing the field of physical AI, looking into products such as smart robots and AI-driven wearables.
There have been reports from leaker Millie A suggesting that Sony is considering a fall 2027 launch for the PS6, and that major manufacturing partner Foxconn has already set aside production capacity for the new hardware. Additional sources have hinted that the PS6’s controller could feature a modular design with a touchscreen.
Despite these rumors, Totoki’s comments make it clear that Sony does not yet have a finalized launch window for the PS6. Global memory and component shortages remain a core reason for the uncertainty surrounding the release timing.
Apart from PS6 news, Sony is facing scrutiny for its decision to gradually phase out physical game discs, moving toward an all-digital ecosystem starting January 2028. This extended development period for the PS6 may ultimately be beneficial as the company adapts to these industry changes.
